The current trend of describing space age electronic organs as "a new generation of musical instruments" has a special meaning for the Iorio family. Not only have they recently developed a new solid-state organ housed in an accordion body, but for six generations, the family has worked to further the technology of producing music. Beginning with church reed organs in Italy over 130 years ago, each successive Iorio generation has contributed to refinements in sound production.

In the late 19th century, Augusto Iorio, an organ apprentice applied the skills acquired from his forefathers to the manufacture of accordions. At the turn of the century, he emigrated to the United States and founded the firm bearing his name. In 1923 his son Candido invented the double tone chamber along with a long list of refinements that included invisible bass and treble shifts, aluminum plate shift mechanisms and celluloid cases.

Al Iorio

Amedeo (Al) Iorio, current president, helped to bring the conventional accordion to its final development period with his invention of the "Amplisonic" tone chamber in 1954. A mechanical engineer with a degree from Stevens Institute of Technology, Al first worked for Fairchild Aviation Corp. on aerial cameras. After joining the US Air Force during World War II, he served with a B-29 squadron on Guam. When the war ended, he joined his father Candido. Always seeking to provide the accordionist with better means of musical expression, he later developed the Accorgan, a pioneering application of electronics to the accordion.

Al Iorio received several patents for the accordion/organ, which he later licensed to the accordion industry including Cordovox.
